Embracing Natural Summer Hair

Wildflower Gypsy Salon + Apothecary is rooted in the belief that owning and celebrating our own femininity grows deeply seeded confidence in our own beauty. Summer in the South lends itself to the perfect time to embrace our natural hair texture and give our traditional beauty routines a break. The best part, besides gaining more time to spend at the beach or gardening, is the ability to still feel pretty and put together.

My favorite way to style summer hair is letting it air-dry naturally. With the right products and a good routine, any type of hair can enjoy this luxury. I always advise clients and friends to use a healthy and hydrating shampoo and conditioner routine in the shower first. This creates a solid foundation for all manageable hairstyles. I personally love Innersense Organics or Surface Haircare. After shampooing and thoroughly rinsing out your conditioner, brush your hair while in the shower. This helps shed loose hairs and creates a more dependable air-dry style once you’re out of the shower.

After you’re done showering, spray a leave-in conditioning spray or hair oil that pairs well with your hair texture and thickness. My go-to’s are Wildflower Gypsy’s Rose + Frankincense Hair Nectar or pure organic argan oil. Follow this with a sea salt mist like our Hibiscus Rose Salt Spray. And at this point, habit will tell you to brush your hair, but resist the temptation! We want your hair to have as much texture and wave to it, and this is the best way to achieve it. Lastly, scrunch your hair and then leave it alone. If you feel like you need a little more volume, feel free to flip your head over and scrunch as it dries.

The best part about air-drying is its imperfect beauty. Every time you air-dry, you’ll most likely have a different look. If you’re having a day where you want to get your hair away from your face, or want to dress it up, a braid is the perfect option. A fishtail braid is my favorite for its ability to look different on everyone, but a traditional three-strand braid looks just as stunning. Simply create a low braid in the back of your head, making sure to not pull the strands too tight. Pull out a few pieces of hair in the front and you’re all set!

If it's a really hot day, a topknot with an accent of a hair scarf is amazing. Pull your air dried hair up into a high ponytail, twist hair into a bun and pin. You can rock a hair scarf like a headband; just fold it down and tie in the back. Or you can take a small scarf and wrap it around your bun and tie in the front. The options are limitless.
